The farm Dean and Ashley currently live on has been owned by the Wilson’s for over 140 years.
While always interested in the Standardbred industry, Dean’s Uncles Melvin and Keith purchased their first mare Painterkin in 1970. She has been the foundation to their success in the business and all of the horses they have raced to this day have been home bred and direct descendants of Painterkin. Dean’s father Raymond also got involved with a few of these horses as a partner with his brothers.
Dean followed the progress of his Uncle’s and Father’s horses for many years but finally got involved in owning a horse when he partnered with his Uncles on a pacer named Rewind who was born in 1984. Rewind was small in size but big on heart and was very successful in his career. He was a stakes winner, a track record holder at the time and reeled off six straight wins to start his career. Building off the success Dean had with Rewind, he partnered once again with his Uncles on a filly named Can’t Beat A Tiger who was born in 1986. She turned out to be a stakes winner and earned over $125,000 in career earnings.
Ashley’s introduction to horses was much earlier than this and started with the Pony Club when she was 10 years. She rode horses for a number of years and even went to Germany for some of her competitions (she was that good!). She went to college and took Equine Studies and worked in Strathroy for a Standardbred farm for a few years. During that time she owned a horse named Tornado Touchdown (barn name of Oliver) that was born in 2008 and that raced for a few years. While Tornado Touchdown had some success on the track he was always Ashley’s favourite and Oliver is still on the farm today (he even made it into their wedding photo shown to the right).
This year is when Dean and Ashley made it official and were married in August.
A new barn designed specifically with large stalls for foaling was completed. It is equipped with cameras that can be monitored from anywhere and vets are on call for emergencies
